The focus of these pages is Beavers, the junior section of Scouts Canada. |
Hand-y Crafts It has always fascinated me, the crafts your Beavers can make by just starting with a cut out of their hand (or foot). We've started here with a few, but I'm sure this section will continue to expand. Here's a list of the ideas we gathered so far:
Christmas (Colony) WreathYou will need:
Here's one you might want to use for Christmas, either as a Colony project or individually. Beavers trace their hands on different colour construction paper. Cut the tracings out. Arrange the hands in a circle and fasten them together. You may even want to add a bow at the bottom of the wreath.
Lamb Easter CardYou will need:
Fold the light-coloured construction paper in half to form the card. Beavers trace a hand, fingers and thumb spread apart, on the black construction paper and cut it out. Glue the cut out hand on the card face, with fingers pointing to the bottom of the card. To make the lambs coat, cover the palm of the hand with reinforcements. The fingers (lamb's legs) and thumb (lambs head) should not have any. Use the one-hole punch to make eyes from the blue construction paper — one per lamb. Put a dot in the middle of each eye and glue eye onto the thumb. Tie a bow with the ribbon and glue onto the neck of the lamb. Finally, use the markers to add grass, birds, flowers, the sun, and so on to the card. Inside the card, write "Happy Easter from you little lamb" and sign.
Moose HeadFor each Beaver to make this craft, you need:
Beavers trace their right and left hands on the light-brown construction paper. Cut out the tracings. These are the antlers. (If your Beavers have trouble tracing one hand or the other, have them make two of the same hand and once it's cut out, turn it over.) From the scraps, cut out a rounded, triangular nose. Trace a shoed foot on the dark brown paper. Cut it out. Attach the hand antlers. Glue on the eyes and nose. Use the markers to make eyeballs and fancy up the antler.
Fish Hand PuppetsFor each Beaver to make this craft, you need:
Beavers trace a hand on the construction paper. Try variations with fingers and thumb spread and close together. Cut out the tracing, add the eye, and decorate. Attach the fish to the straw and let Beavers put on an underwater show.
BirdsFor each Beaver to make this craft, you need:
Beavers trace a hand on the colour paper, and cut it out. Add eye and feathers. Place feathers along the fingers of the cut out hand and a three or four in a cluster (wing) in the palm. Fold the chenille stem and secure it to the body for the legs. A smaller piece of stem or twist tie could also be used for feet.
Helping HandsIf a Beaver has been particularly helpful during a meeting, consider letting that Beaver wear the Helping Hands during your closing. Make this craft during one of the first meetings of the Beaver year, then using it as an encouragement and award during each meeting of the year (and camps). To make this craft, you need:
Before you start, explain to the Beavers what they are doing and why. Beavers trace a hand on the colour paper, and cut it out. Each Beaver prints their name on the hand. Let the Beavers decorate the hand any way they want. Using the one-hole punch, make a hole in the bottom-center of the palm. Have the Beavers thread their hand onto the ribbon. Tie the ends in a bow.
Hands (and feet) TurkeyFor each Beaver to make this craft, you need:
On the brown construction paper, have the Beavers trace both feet (shoes on). Cut tracings out. Glue the cut out feet together at the heels so they fan out at the toes (you are forming the triangular body of the turkey.) From the yellow construction paper, cut out two eyes; from orange, a diamond-shape beak and two legs; and from red, cut out the bib (the wattle). Glue the eyes, beak and bib to the head (top — heels — of triangular body). Glue the legs to the bottom (toes). Beavers now trace and cut out their hands on green, yellow, red and blue construction paper. Trace and cut out three hands from the orange. Glue one orange hand on top of each side of the turkey. These are the wings. To form the tail, fan out the other five hands behind the turkey and glue them onto the back.
ReindeerTo make this craft, you need:
With their fingers and thumb spread, Beavers trace a hand on the unprinted side of the cereal box cardboard. Cut it out. Glue the felt onto the print side of the cut out hand. (If possible, press the "sandwich" under heavy books so they dry flat.) Cut off the felt from around the hand. The fingers are the legs and the thumb the head. Punch a hole at the base of the thumb. Thread the pipe cleaner through the hole, fold in half, and twist snug. Shape the pipe cleaner for antlers. Punch out red and black dots for the nose and eye. Tie a bow around the neck. Punch a hole at the top of the back (base of the palm) and thread a piece of yarn through it. Tie the ends of the yarn together. This is the tree hanger. Write a Christmas message on the back of the reindeer.
![]() Peace DoveTo make this craft, you need:
Each Beaver traces the dove template (below) onto a sheet of paper and cuts it out. Using a marker, add an eye to both sides of the dove. On each of two smaller sheets of paper the Beavers traces around their non-writing hand, keeping the fingers on the non-writing hand slightly open as they trace. Cut out each tracing. Curl the fingers of the tracing using the pencil — to look like feathers. Glue the hands on each side of the dove. Attach by the palm so that the fingers overlap at the top. ![]() Peace Dove template.
Coaster or Place MatThis one might take two weeks because of laminating. Here's what you'll need:
Trace around Beaver's hands on each sheet of construction paper. Print Beaver's name, year and "Happy Father's Day" (or appropriate expression) on the hand print. Laminate these and use as coasters. OR ... glue the hand cutout onto another piece of construction paper and laminate this to produce a place mat.

Here's a few books we've found that feature hand and foot craft projects.
