A Cornerstone of Scouting October 2000 When our campfires are over, our canoe trips completed, our games played, and our badges all presented, what matters in Scouting is how we got along with other while doing these things. Scouting is a people thing. It's all about giving to others, helping others, listening to others, loving others. It's all about the Good Turn, isn't it? Please don't treat the Good Turn lightly. It's not something we just do every now and then. There's a whole new world waiting for each of us when the Good Turn becomes a part of our lives. Amazingly though, the Good Turn is not a required part of any badge and is not even part of our promise, yet Scouting without the Good Turn is simply NOT Scouting. The Good Turn is a very personal thing. If you make a commitment to the Good Turn way of life, you make it to yourself only, not to anyone else. And once you make that commitment and live with it a while, it will become a thing to cherish all your life whether in Scouting or not. Let's make our world a better world through the Good Turn. Why not, after all, we are the Good Turn people, aren't we? — Jim Russell Last updated: October 3, 2000 |
