Beaver Scouting Around the World
Different countries have different words to describe the Scouting they provide for children of Beaver age. Beavering, or its equivalent, is growing all the time as more and more countries recognize the value. Some countries have more than one recognized Scouting Association. There are large numbers of Scouts in developing countries but as yet, few offer Scouting for the under eights.
- Australia
- Joey Scouts is for children aged 6 to 8 years. The scarf and Joey Scout woggle is worn over everyday clothing.
Promise:
I promise to do my best, to love my God and be helpful.
Law:
A Joey Scout cares, a Joey Scout shares.
Theme:
H.O.P. — Help Other People.
- Canada
- Beaver Scouts is for children 5 to 7 years. They wear a Coby hat with blue cap and brown brim, and a brown vest with blue pockets. They wear the group neckerchief.
Promise:
I promise to love God and to help take care of the world.
Law:
A Beaver has fun, works hard and helps his family and friends.
Motto:
Sharing. Sharing. Sharing.
- Denmark
- The Danish Guide and Scout Association has Micro Scouts aged 6 to 8 years who meet in a Micro Pack. They wear a blue shirt and group neckerchief and do not have a Promise and Law.
The YMCA Scouts have Beavers aged 6 to 8 years who meet in Colonies of up to 16 boys and girls. They wear a hat and t-shirt and do not have a Promise and Law.
- England
- Beaver Scouting is for children 6 to 8 years old. The uniform consists of a grey sweatshirt, group scarf and woggle. They meeting in Colonies of up to 24 children.
Promise:
I promise to do my best, to be kind and helpful, and to love God.
- France
- Scouts de France have Le Sarabandes for boys and girls aged 6½ to 8½ who meet in Colonies of between 8 and 15 children. There is a simple Promise and no specific uniform.
The Scouts and Guides of France have Lutins aged 6 to 8. There is no uniform or Promise.
- Ireland
- The Scout Association of Ireland have Beaver Scouts aged 6 to 8 years who meet in Teams. They wear green jumpers, grey trousers and a green scarf.
Promise:
I Promise to do my best to love God and to be a good Beaver Scout.
The Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland have Beaver Scouts for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years who meet in Colonies of up to 24. They wear a grey jumper, navy trousers and a group scarf.
Promise:
I Promise to love God and to help take care of the World.
- Italy
- The Catholic Guides and Scouts of Italy have Castorina for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years old, meeting in units of 18 to 24. They wear a light blue shirt, yellow scarf and a blue cap with yellow visor.
Promise:
I Promise to be a friend of Jesus, to love everyone and to do everything as well as I can.
- Netherlands
- Scouting Nederland has Beaver Scouts for boys and girls aged 5 to 7 years. They wear a red sweatshirt with a blue scarf and hat. There is no promise.
- New Zealand
- Keas is for children aged 6 to 8 years meeting in units of between 18 and 24. They wear a Kea woggle and the group scarf.
Promise:
I will try to share my fun and help others.
Law:
I share. I care. I discover. I grow.
- Sweden
- Beavers is for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years in Colonies of 16. They wear a T-shirt with a Beaver Scout emblem and a group scarf.
Promise:
We are Beavers willing to share alike — be helpful too.
- United States
- Tiger Cubs is for boys aged 7 meeting in groups of four to eight with an adult. They wear a t-shirt and emblem.
Promise:
I promise to love God, my family and my country and to learn about the world.
