Menu Tips and Grocery Shopping

Tips for Planning a Popular Menu

  • Keep the meals simple. Usually, the simpler the better. Kids just like it that way.
  • Add variety. Give the meals colour, shapes and flavours. Be creative meal-to-meal. Vary the ways you prepare the same food. Try ethnic dishes.
  • Try to serve Beavers the meals you know they like. Of course, this'll vary from camp-to-camp, and year-to-year.
  • Include foods you don't like. You might not like peas, but many children do. (And the other way around.)

How to Make a Grocery List

  • Look over the menu and make a list of all recipe ingredients you'll need. Check with your Quartermaster for staple items (spices, flour, etc.), and add to the list any item which you need.
  • Calculate the amount of meat, fish, poultry or alternatives you need for each day. Take in account the number of Beaver (and parents) you'll serve and their age. The following example shows how to calculate the amount to buy.

Example:   Ground Beef for 24 Beavers

Plan on serving about 2 ounces (60 grams), cooked per child. For 24 children, you would serve 48 ounces of cooked ground beef.

Because of cooking losses, you would have to buy more than 48 ounces of raw ground beef. The following chart tells you how much to buy for the number of Beavers you serve. A pound of raw ground beef is enough to serve 6 Beavers. So, to serve 24 Beavers, you must buy four pounds (or 1.8 kilograms) of ground beef.
