Snacks
Quoting from the Facts on Snacks booklet form the Ontario Milk Marketing Board:
"Snacking is a sign of the times. Busy lifestyles and long days have made snacks an important addition to daily meals. This is especially true for young children who may get a major part of their day's food from snacks. That's why it's so important to provide healthy snacks, ones that are both nutritious and consumed in a way that lowers the chance of dental decay..."
Snacks are an important part of the nutritious diet for Beaver age children. Besides, Beavers always seem to be hungry. A child's small stomach can't hold enough to last from one meal to the next. Therefore snacks must contribute to the child's daily nutritional needs.
Snacks should be low in sugar to prevent tooth decay.
Nutritionists and dentists have developed a "SNACK SIGNALS" system to rate snacks, based on sugar content and nutritional value.

Occasional Snacks
|
|
The Occasional or Caution snacks are your next best choice for a snack if the Anytime snacks are not available. These snacks should not be chosen as everyday snacks. Some of them can be harmful to the Beavers (teeth and body) since they are high in fat, salt and sugar.
|
• milkshakes
• milk pudding
• chocolate milk
• ice cream
• flavoured yoghurt
• fruit muffins and bread
• sweetened fruit and vegetable juice
|
The foods listed below are not good snacks because they're either not nutritious and/or they're harmful to teeth. However, as you probably know, many of these items are as popular with children, as they are with adults.
|
Never as a Snack
|
|
The Never as a Snack or the Stop snacks are high in sugar. Many of them stick to teeth and are generally the most harmful. If serving these foods to your Beavers, include them with meals rather than at snack time.
